DoE files case against four for hill cutting in Sylhet

The Department of Environment (DoE) in Sylhet filed a case against four individuals for illegally cutting hillocks to sell plots in Sylhet Sadar upazila.
Mamunur Rashid, an inspector at the DoE's Sylhet district office, lodged the case yesterday with the Sylhet Environment Court.
The accused are Aziz Khan Sajib, 34, of Purbo Pathantula in Sylhet city, Md Abdur Razzak Khan, 35, of Jahangirnagar under Tukerbazar union in Sylhet Sadar upazila, Faizul Haque, 52, of Noapara in Sylhet city, and Dewan Shakib Ahmed, 33, of Company Bungalow in Malnichhara Tea Estate, Sylhet city.
The case was filed under Section 15 of the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Act, 1995.
Md Badrul Huda, assistant director of the DoE's Sylhet district office, forwarded it for further proceedings.
According to the case statement, the DoE conducted an on-site inspection on January 25 in Angaruya Mouza of Sylhet Sadar upazila and found evidence of hill cutting in two sections of land classified as hillocks.
The accused had recently removed over 300,000 cubic feet of soil from the hillocks, allegedly to sell the land as plots.
The case also mentions that hill cutting without prior permission violates Section 6(b) of the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Act, 1995, and is a punishable offense under Section 15 of the law.
