30 killed, 60 hurt in festival stampede in India

At least 30 people were killed and 60 injured in a pre-dawn stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela, in Prayagraj, formerly Allahabad, in India's Uttar Pradesh state, a senior official confirmed.
The stampede occurred at the confluence of the Ganges, Jamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers as crores of devotees jostled for space to take a holy dip on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, considered one of the most auspicious days in Hindu tradition.

Deputy Inspector General of Uttar Pradesh Police Vaibhav Krishna said at a press conference in Prayagraj this evening that 30 people lost their lives, and 60 others sustained injuries in the tragic incident.
